Women find worms in food at 2 McDonald's restaurants

Two women recently took to social media to post photos of worms that they found in their food after eating sandwiches from McDonald's.

Tuesday, Lacey Jo Lovett, of Kentucky, said she finished eating a McChicken from a McDonald's restaurant in Draffenville, Kentucky, when she picked up a piece of lettuce on the sandwich wrapper and found a worm.

Just two days prior, Madison Stephens had experienced a similar situation at a McDonald's in Mayfield, Kentucky, 25 miles away.

Stephens said she took her 1-year-old son to the restaurant and ordered a fish sandwich and a cheeseburger. 

Stephens ate half her fish sandwich when she said a worm fell out of it and started crawling towards her son's food.

"If I hadn't seen that worm, my son would have eaten that because it was already on top of his sandwich," she told WPSD. "That's how close he came to eating it."

Stephens said that initially, restaurant employees said they couldn't do anything about the order since she couldn't find her receipt.

She said she later complained to McDonald's officials, who sent her a $10 gift card in the mail.

But for Stephens, the gesture seemed like "a slap in the face," WPSD reported. She said she doesn't want money, but rather an inspection from the health department.

"That scared me, and as a mom, I don't want another child to have to experience something like that," she said.

"Food quality and safety are a top priority for us. We will continue to take all appropriate measures to gather all facts and resolve the matter," a McDonald's spokesman said in a statement following the incident.

Saturday, Michael Love, the owner-operator of the two restaurants, said he's been unable to substantiate Lovett's and Stephens' claims. He said inspections of the restaurants by health officials did not uncover any of the problems raised by the customers, the Associated Press reported.

Chipotle announces plans for burger restaurant

First Burger King started selling hot dogs. Now Chipotle has announced plans to stir things up by expanding its burrito and taco offerings to burgers with a new restaurant called Tasty Made.

The restaurant is set to open in Lancaster, Ohio, this fall.

Tasty Made's menu will be mostly limited to burgers, fries and shakes, and the restaurant will aim to promote better, cleaner food and ingredients -- just like Chipotle. 

"Early fast food burger restaurants generally had focused menus," Chipotle CEO Steve Ells said in a release. "We think there's great strength in that original fast food model and wanted to create a restaurant built around that. Making only burgers, fries and shakes with really great ingredients, we think we can appeal to people's timeless love of burgers, but in a way that is consistent with our long-term vision.

"Tasty Made will use Responsibly Raised brand beef (from animals that are raised in more humane ways and without the use of antibiotics or added hormones), shakes made with real ingredients including milk, cream, sugar, eggs and other natural ingredients, and fresh-made buns that are free of preservatives, dough conditioners and other artificial ingredients."

Chipotle, which found success in positioning itself as an alternative to traditional fast-food chains, has been struggling to win back customers after a series of food scares in past years.

Chipotle has already ventured in the direction of different cuisines. In 2001, the company opened an Asian food restaurant called ShopHouse Southeast Asian Kitchen, which has 15 locations. The company also operates a pizza chain called Pizzeria Locale, which has five locations.

Deals and freebies for National Ice Cream Day

What better way to satisfy your sweet tooth than by indulging in some cool, delicious -- and most importantly discounted -- ice cream?

July is National Ice Cream Month, and the middle of the month marks National Ice Cream Day. 

This year, get a sundae on Sunday, July 17, when certain retailers will offer deals and freebies. Some won't even make you wait until Sunday -- Uber is offering a sweet deal on Friday.

Here's what to look out for: 

Baskin Robbins: Customers can receive a free upgrade to a waffle cone with any ice cream purchase during the month of July. The ice cream chain will donate a portion of all ice cream proceeds on Sunday to the United Service Organization.

Blue Bell: Try the newest flavor, Cookie Two Step, released Friday nationwide.

Carvel: Carvel will give customers a free cup or cone on Sunday with the purchase of one of equal or larger size.

Cold Stone Creamery: Members of the eClub can receive buy one, get one free coupons.

Friendly's: The restaurant's monthlong Sprinklefest offers discounts on frosted treats.

Marble Slab Cream Creamery: Marble Slab will offer a buy one, get one deal Sunday until 1 p.m.

Monkey Joe’s: Guests at select locations of the indoor kids play centers get free ice cream cups while supplies last on Sunday.

PetSmart: Participating PetSmart PetHotel locations will give out free ice cream samples to dogs on Sunday. 

Uber: On Friday, July 15, people in 400 cities around the world can have Magnum ice cream bars delivered to them by Uber, free of charge. Free deliveries are available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Roach falls on health inspector's iPad while at Florida restaurant

A Florida restaurant had bad luck when a health inspection report said a roach fell from the ceiling onto someone walking through the establishment -- the health inspector.

WPLG reported that the inspection took place at Argenti Pizza in Tamarac, Florida, and the insect fell from the ceiling onto an iPad that the inspector was holding.

The inspector said in his report that there were multiple other roaches in the establishment other than the one that plopped onto his iPad, WPLG reported. The restaurant was shut down shortly afterward.

"Dead roaches on premises. Observed 10 dead between the wall and steam table in the kitchen," the report said, according to WPLG. "Observed 2 dead on the shelf with plates above the chest freezer. Observed 50 dead roaches under the cooking equipment and four dead on the legs of the large mixer. Observed nine dead roaches in the reach-in freezer on the cook line. Two dead roaches on the floor by the reach-in freezer next to, the back door. Observed 20 dead roaches on the floor under the three-compartment sink next to the hole in the wall. Observed 75 dead roaches on the floor by the walk-in cooler."

Barnes and Noble to open restaurants, serve alcohol

Barnes & Noble is merging books and booze to save its book business.

The bookseller is opening four concept stores around the U.S. that will feature full restaurants that sell beer and wine.

Barnes & Noble already has Starbucks cafes in most of its bookstores, but the new restaurants will feature breakfast, lunch and dinner menus, and a server will take your order.

The first store will open in Eastchester, New York, in October. The three other stores will be in Edina, Minnesota; Folsom, California; and Loudoun County, Virginia, Fortune reported.

The head of the project said it was about creating "a better bookstore" that drives traffic to the store and keeps people there longer.

The company has faced slumping sales recently thanks to people turning to online retailers, like Amazon, to buy books. Its sales fell .8 percent last quarter.

The company's Nook devices and e-book business aren't performing well either. Nook's market share is at 9 percent after it held 27 percent in 2011.

Man leaves $1,000 tip, returns next day to get it back

It seemed too good to be true for Skye Seumptewa when she opened the ticket book left by her customer and more than $1,000 was in there. She knew something was up, and that suspicion was confirmed when her former customer returned the next day to get his money back.

KUSA reported the man was eating at Thailicious, an Edgewater, Colorado, restaurant, on Monday night and sat at the bar, ordering a few glasses of wine with a meal before paying for his check. According to Seumptewa, he settled the bill and left, which is when she noticed the bounty of bills left inside.

"We thought he was just some super-loaded dude who wanted to make our night,” she told KUSA. 

Bee Anantatho, one of the restaurant's owners, said he and the workers were excited, but also a little skeptical. "(The server) was so excited about it. He said he's heard of the stories like this, but not with this much money. Like $400. This was something huge. I said maybe we should wait because that's too much money. Let's wait to see if he comes back or not."

The customer returned and said he was a little drunk when he left the original tip. "He came in and asked for the money back," Anantatho added. "He thought he lost it. He said he was a little drunk, and I think he believed that he counted 20 bills of money so I think that he believed that it was all singles."

The man left them with a $40 tip instead, the Denver Post reported.

Anantatho, who co-owns the restaurant with his wife, Surachai Surabotsopon, said they decided to give the money back for karma.

"Many people have said we have a right to keep the money, since it was already in the checkbook," he said. "I believe in karma, so if it's not ours, then we should give it back. He's still welcome."

British restaurant owner gets 6 years for killing man with curry

An owner of an Indian restaurant in North Yorkshire, England, was sentenced to six years in prison after he served a curry dish containing peanuts to a customer with an allergy, resulting in his death.

Mohammaed Zaman was sentenced Monday after being found guilty of manslaughter by gross negligence among other food-safety offenses, The New York Times reported. The incident happened in January 2014 when Paul Wilson, 38, ordered chicken tikka masala from Zaman’s restaurant, Indian Garden, and specified he couldn’t have any nuts in his order.

Wilson had visited the restaurant previously and was given a container with "no nuts" written on top of it, the Times added.

He was found by a roommate dead after going into anaphylactic shock, prosecutors said.

According to authorities, Zaman cut corners by replacing almond powder in his recipes with a cheaper mix of groundnuts and hired undocumented workers to put together his curry dishes. There was an incident with another customer with a nut allergy three weeks before Wilson’s death.

"Time and again he ignored the danger and did not protect his customers," Richard Wright, told a jury at Teesside Crown Court, according to the Times.

Zaman had about $434,000 in debt, which led to his cutting corners, the Times reported. He also had a tendency to not be at the restaurant, allowing his employees to run the operations, and was not there when the curry was served to Wilson.

"Paul Wilson was in the prime of his life," Judge Simon Bourne-Arton told Zaman, according to the Yorkshire Post. "He, like you, worked in the catering trade. He, unlike you, was a careful man."

Taco Bell reveals plans for new, sleek-looking restaurants

Taco Bell plans to swap out the company's familiar neon colors, fluorescent lighting and cartoonish visual displays for LED lighting, reclaimed wood and energy-efficient heating and cooling.

Four new designs will take over existing restaurants in Orange County, California, this summer, with a broader revamp planned this year. 

“While all four restaurant designs each have a different contextual personality, they all share a commonality in expressing Taco Bell’s brand like never before,” said Marisa Thalberg, chief marketing officer at Taco Bell Corp. “From the open kitchen that showcases our freshly prepared foods to the community tables designed for friends to hang out, each of these formats fosters a modern, unique experience.” 

Deborah Brand, the fast food chain's vice president of development and design, told USA Today the changes were made with dinner in mind. 

“It’s no longer one size fits all,” she said. “Consumers are looking for a localized, customized and personalized experiences that reflect the diversity of their communities. The flexibility in bringing these four designs to life gives us just that.”

Most of the company's customers complete orders via the drive-thru, and the company hopes to compete with more modern fast-casual restaurants like Chipotle for sit-down sales. 

Taco Bell hasn't been afraid to challenge competitors, but the results have been mixed. In 2014, the company added a breakfast menu to chip away at McDonald's dominance in the mornings, but a year later, breakfast still only accounted for 6 percent of Taco Bell's sales.  

Sales may be on the rise this year, however, after Taco Bell doubled down and started offering a $1 Morning Value Menu. 

As for dinner, Taco Bell started its transition to the more upscale last year when it opened two "Cantina" restaurants that serve alcohol. 

The company, which plans to open 2,000 new restaurants by 2022, alluded to expanding the Cantina concept when it announced its four new modern restaurant designs. 

“Building new restaurants is a key component to the overall growth and evolution of Taco Bell,” said Brian Niccol, chief executive officer at Taco Bell Corp. “Great design, great food and great economics is at the heart of our growth.”
