This talk is part of the "Materialism and New Materialism Across the Disciplines" series, organized by Sarah Ellenzweig (English) and Jack Zammito (history). There has never been any question that Spinoza's entire philosophy, and especially the Tractatus Theologio-Politicus, was aimed at unseating or drastically weakening religious authority and promoting toleration and freedom of expression. Many writers have also seen Spinoza as the first great democratic philosopher. Recently, however, several scholars have questioned his democratic and egalitarian credentials. To what extent are they right to do so?
