This day-long seminar, featuring five eminent scholars from the United States and India, has been organized by Indira Peterson, the David B. Truman Professor of Asian Studies, Mount Holyoke College. The event will be inaugurated by the Consul General of India in Houston, the Honorable Harish Parvathaneni; and Nandita Harish, who will light the traditional lamp. The program includes a dance demonstration by Rathna Kumar in the Nidhika and Pershant Mehta Arts of India Gallery, and a reception. Keynote Address: Shiva and the Goddess in Myth and Poetry Speaker: Indira Peterson, the David B. Truman Professor of Asian Studies, Mount Holyoke College • Telling Tales: Shiva and His Stories at the Kailasanatha Temple in Kanchipuram Speaker: Padma Kaimal, professor, art and art history department, Colgate University • Chola Bronzes: Connoisseurship and Archival Research Speaker: Vidya Dehejia, the Barbara Stoler Miller Professor of Indian Art, Columbia University • Singing of Shiva and His Sacred Places: The Poems of the Tamil Saints Speaker: Indira Peterson, the David B. Truman Professor of Asian Studies, Mount Holyoke College • Tracing the Dance of Shiva in Sculpture Speaker: R. Nagaswamy, former director of archaeology, Tamil Nadu State; former vice-chancellor, Kanchipuram University • Overwhelming the Heart: Experiencing Shiva's Presence in Manikkavachakar's "Tiruvachakam" Speaker: Gardner Harris, visiting assistant professor, department of religion, Bucknell University Related Performance Later in the evening, the Anjali Dance Company presents SHIVOHAM, Dances on Shiva, 7 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center, 5601 S.
