American artist Henry Ossawa Tanner was one of the most distinguished painters of Christian themes at the turn of the 20th century. The son of a former slave, Tanner trained in Philadelphia with the great Realist painter Thomas Eakins, but Tanner had to move to Paris to find the artistic freedom and international success denied in post-Civil War America. Join this guided tour to follow Tanner's development as he invigorated traditional biblical subjects with a thoroughly modern spirit, as showcased in the exhibition Henry Ossawa Tanner: Modern Spirit. - Admission is free when you purchase lunch from that day's on-site food truck or from the MFAH location of Cafe Express, so make Lunch + Look part of your routine! General admission is always free for MFAH Members.
