The secant varieties of Segre varieties are important in numerous fields, such as algebraic statistics, biology, signal processing, complexity theory, etc. For these applications, one needs the equations of these varieties. Equations are known for the Segre variety itself, and the second secant variety of the Segre. For the third secant variety, equations had only been known for the 3-factor case. In this talk I will explain the set-theoretical defining equations for the third secant variety of the n-factor case.
