Presented by Deborah Roldán, MFAH assistant director of exhibitions, in conjunction with the exhibition Portrait of Spain: Masterpieces from the Prado. When the Spanish Old Masters were "discovered" in the 19th century—their splendid works previously unknown outside of Spain, hidden from view in royal and noble collections and far-flung churches—they were never to be forgotten again. The Spanish School's place within the Western canon was assured. As such, the influence of its great painters would be felt into the modern era, and continues to reverberate today. Sargent, Chase, Eakins, and Henri were among the first of their generation to find within Spanish painting the truth, realism, and technical bravura with which they sought to imbue their own representations of modern life.
