On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 authorizing the internment of American citizens of Japanese ancestry and resident aliens from Japan. Entire communities were unjustly placed under suspicion and moved to camps overseen by the U.S. military. One such camp near the Sierra Nevada mountains in California, Manzanar, has long been a salient reminder of the grave injustice done. Since 1969, former internees together with their families and friends have been gathering annually at the Manzanar cemetary to remember and to honor. Now, in our post 9/11 world, the journey to Manzanar is one of retrospection and solidarity for people of all ages, races, and nationalities.
