Introduced by photojournalist Michael Kamber Focusing on a remote 15-man outpost considered one of the most dangerous assignments in the Afghanistan war, Restrepo evokes a harrowing real-time experience for the viewer. The film won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at Sundance Film Festival (2010) and was nominated for Best Documentary by the Academy Awards (2010). Codirector Tim Hetherington (who has a photograph in the MFAH exhibition WAR/PHOTOGRAPHY) was killed by a mortar blast in Libya in 2011. Codirector Sebastian Junger created the nonprofit Reporters Instructed in Saving Colleagues (RISC) in Hetherington’s honor. “Our intention was to capture the experience of combat, boredom, and fear through the eyes of the soldiers themselves. Their lives were our lives: we did not sit down with their families, we did not interview Afghans, and we did not explore geopolitical debates. Soldiers are living and fighting and dying at remote outposts in Afghanistan in conditions that few Americans back home can imagine. Their experiences are important to understand, regardless of one's political beliefs.”—Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger Note: We do our best to ensure all information is accurate. However, it's a good idea to visit the website listed or contact the organization or venue to verify event details.
