A 5:30 p.m. reception, in the lobby of the Law Building, precedes the film screening. To better acquaint Houston audiences with the Houston Symphony's March 1–2 performances of Alban Berg's masterwork opera, Wozzeck, at Jones Hall, the MFAH presents Joachim Hess's 1972 film version of the opera, starring Toni Blankenheim (104 minutes). First performed in 1925, Wozzeck is a chilling and tragic story of social criticism, lust, murder, and morality, as poor Wozzeck falls victim to cruelty and descends into insanity. “Alban Berg’s music is so deep, so new, and so perfect," says Hans Graf, who conducts the symphony performances. "It strikes an inescapable chord of compassion and empathy for our ill-fated hero, Wozzeck.” Helga K. Aurisch, MFAH curator of European art, introduces the film by briefly placing it in the context of the Expressionist movement in the visual arts. To learn more about the full range of educational programs the Houston Symphony has initiated around its Wozzeck performances, click here. This program, in partnership with the Houston Symphony, is free but requires a ticket for admission.
