Wozzeck: Shepherd School students offer lecture presentations on Alban Berg's opera in collaboration with the Houston Symphony’s March 1 and 2 concert performances.
Presented by Emily Boudreaux, Charles Halka, Qingfan Jiang, and Robert Nelson.
This year the Houston Symphony will perform a concert version of Alban Berg’s Wozzeck. To interest young, new audiences in the event, Rice students will offer lecture presentations about Berg’s masterpiece to college students who are unfamiliar with the opera. In addition to the talk at the Shepherd School, four presentations are scheduled at Houston Area community colleges this spring. Topics such as the opera’s relationship to expressionist art, the drama behind it, and the compositional techniques used by Alban Berg will be discussed. The hope is to engage college students who are new to classical music, as well as those who listen to classical music but may not be familiar with the Second Viennese School. Modern music often is treated as highly academic and incomprehensible to the untrained listener. They will show new listeners that Berg’s music is powerful and expressive, and holds an important place in the repertory.
7:30 p.m., Room 1133
