Ranked among one of the top fifty country music hit makers, Gilley earned his Texas Legend status by elevating country music to new heights of popularity through an incredible career as an entertainer, recording artist and businessman. In 1971, after quickly becoming one of Houston’s most popular acts, Gilley opened landmark Texas nightclub and “world’s largest honky tonk” Gilley’s Club in Pasadena, Texas. Gilley’s soon became the launching pad for some of country music’s biggest stars and eventually, the centerpiece of the major motion picture “Urban Cowboy.” The country and Hollywood “Walk of Fame” star went on to open additional Gilley’s Clubs, restaurants and theatres across America. After years of having its doors closed, developers are considering new plans to rebuild the original Gilley’s in Pasadena and thus, continue the tradition of the timeless Texas legend.
Today, Gilley lives between Pasadena and Branson, Missouri, where he regularly performs in his theatre namesake, the Mickey Gilley Theatre.
