Extending 4,000 miles from Eastern Europe to Eastern Asia—with routes into the Arabian Peninsula and North Africa—the Silk Road was an important route for exchange of goods and ideas. Consider works of art that benefitted from the cultural transmission via pack animals in the 2nd century B.C., to today’s freight rail connecting China and Germany.
