The Menil Collection museum and a group of surrounding non-profit arts organizations come together on Saturday, April 20 to host a free afternoon of art and entertainment that will take place on the Menil Collection lawn and the Menil Bookstore deck, as well as the Rothko Chapel, Byzantine Fresco Chapel and Houston Center for Photography.
Highlighting the diversity of the Menil neighborhood arts community, the festival will include musical performances, spoken word, yoga, literature, and visual art.
Highlights include: Music @ The Menil Collection Entrance (1515 Sul Ross) 11am - Thomas Hulten Hot Viking Dixieland Band, presented by Da Camera of Houston Thomas Hulten is principal trombone with the Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet and has performed with some of music's most influential modern artists including Ray Charles, The Temptations, Natalie Cole and Barry Manilow.
4:30pm - line upon line perform Hughes Dufourt's Erewhon, presented by The Menil Collection Based in Austin, line upon line has been called "the premier new music percussion ensemble in Texas and the South" and is committed to seeking new ways for percussion instruments to advance contemporary music. They will perform Hughes Dufourt's massive percussion sextet Erewhon, even though they are just a trio. Readings @ The Menil Collection Bookstore (1520 Sul Ross)
12pm - "Blooms," part of Houston Young Writers Reading Series, presented by Writer in the Schools
1pm - Indie Editors take the Mic featuring Austin Tremblay, Sophie Klahr, and Adam Peterson
2pm - Mat Johnson, presented by Inprint 3pm - Derrick Brown and Jason Bayani, presented by Write Bloody Books 4pm - Bootown Theater Yoga @ The Rothko Chapel (3900 Yupon)
11am - Hatha Yoga with Mary Oppermann
1pm - Kids Yoga with Laura Calcaterra of Big Yoga Houston 2:30pm - Acro Jam Yoga and Partner-based Acrobatic Yoga with Jeff Newton Film @ The Byzantine Fresco Chapel (4011 Yupon)
1:30pm & 3:30pm - The Territory, presented by SWAMP. The Territory is SWAMP's short film showcase and features new directions in film, video and digital media. Writing Tours @ The Menil Collection (1515 Sul Ross) 1:00pm & 1:30pm - Writers in the Schools hosts 30-minute creative writing tours at The Menil Collection designed for the whole family. WITS writers will lead participants on a tour of galleries in the Menil and use specific works of art as inspiration for fun creative writing exercises.
Houston Indie Book Fest @ The East End of The Menil Collection (1515 Sul Ross) All Day - Completely unique to the Houston and Austin areas, the Houston Indie Book Fest features a variety of nationally distributed literary journals and small--press books along side local booksellers, book and magazine publishers, literary organizations and writers. Panel discussions, readings and children's activities will take place within the area of the Houston Indie Book Fest.
