Hearing loss, the nation’s number one birth defect , is an invisible disability that has critical effects on language development and learning. In Houston there are more than 130,000 children affected by hearing loss and people today are losing their hearing two-and-a-half times faster than their parents or grandparents (Starkey Hearing Foundation, 2010). While there are various causes for hearing loss, the Center’s goal during BHSM this year is to not only to increase awareness of pediatric hearing loss, but to also locally teach children and families how to prevent noise-induced hearing loss and encourage them to spread the word.
In an effort to prevent and identify hearing loss in Houston area children, the Center is rallying its clients and the community to join the movement and break down communication barriers. The Center’s Audiology Clinic is offering free hearing tests for children ages birth to 18 years old. Families are encouraged to bring their children to The Center for Hearing and Speech at 3636 W. Dallas St., Houston, TX 77019 on Wednesday, May 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
