8:00 am - 9:15 am / Organic Weed Control – Mike Serant OHBA President. Very effective organic weed control is possible. The key is manipulating soil biology, chemistry and environmental conditions to favor turfgrass over weeds.This method will reduce weeds and provide many other benefits as well.
9:15 am - 10:15 am / Beneficial Insects – Paul Winski – County Agent – Horticulture. It’s not just you vs the pest insects chomping on your plants. There are a host of beneficial insects that are helping to maintain a balance in nature. Learn who are the good guys, strategies for keeping them around and tips on how to release beneficial insects for maximum effectiveness.
10:15 am - 10:45 am / Break/Outside Tour – Skip Richter & Paul Winski. Grab a snack/drink and step outside for a brief tour of the ongoing research and demonstration trials at the Extension Office.
10:45 am - 11:45 am / Prevent disease and insect problems by building healthy soils – John Ferguson OHBA Director. In the last 10 years there has been a tremendous amount of new research by the USDA and our universities on the importance of soil microbiology in growing healthy plants and preventing many common disease and pest problems. This talk will introduce the latest research and how it can benefit you now.
11:45 am - 1:00 pm / A delicious Organic lunch and a fascinating Soil Health demonstration by Gene Barnes – OHBA Director. After lunch we go outside and visit with Gene Barnes about biological water conservation methods. We will look at turf plots where one has been injected with a precise formula designed to improve soil structure, accelerate microbial growth and to use soil water more efficiently.
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm / Laws & Regulations Update – Manuel Martinez – Ag Pesticide Inspector – TDA. Learn the latest in pesticide laws and regulation while gaining valuable insight into using pesticides more safely.
2:00 pm - 3:00 pm / Diagnosing Common Lawns & Landscape Problems – Robert ‘Skip’ Richter County Agent – Horticulture. This is another great, fun and insightful class as we play plant detective and learn the many ways plants can be affected - disease, insect, environmental, cultural? Learn how to decide if a pesticide is necessary, and how to time applications to minimize pesticide use and maximize effectiveness.
3:00 pm - 3:30 pm / Break/Hands-On Diagnostic Lab. Get a hands-on, up close and personal look at some of the disease and pest problems from our area landscapes.
3:30 pm / Wrap-up, CEU credits and evaluation.
