It is known that L^2 perturbations of the free Jacobi matrix have absolutely continuous spectrum on their essential spectrum. We will see that, more generally, an L^2 bounded variation condition on Jacobi coefficients implies existence of absolutely continuous spectrum. We will also show that this existence result is optimal. This is joint work with Yoram Last.
