Kiselev, Remling and Simon introduced a generalization of Prüfer variables that they used to compare solutions of a Schrödinger equation with potential V_0(x) with solutions of the Schrödinger equation with potential V_0(x)+V(x), where V is a perturbation of the potential. We derive similar Prüfer variables for solutions of the Jacobi and Szegö recursions, and use them to prove results regarding the stability of spectral properties of periodic Jacobi and CMV operators under small perturbations.
