Doctor Joseph Agris is well-known not only as a highly skilled plastic surgeon, but also as a great philanthropist. For 35 plus years he goes to the Third World countries with a team of medics-volunteers. He has performed surgery on thousands of children who had been born with terrible birth defects. His work gives these kids the chance for normal life.
In recent years the medical missions had taken Dr. Agris deep into the remote areas of Pakistan. These regions are among the most dangerous in the world and not recommended to visit by Americans. But Dr. Agris won the trust of local people. He traveled to the poorest villages and treated people who have never seen a physician before. Pakistanis called Joseph Agris “Dr. Angel” or “Crazy Texan”.
Doctor Agris helped a lot of patients who had been maimed by the violence that has long defined life in the region. The more inhumanity Dr. Agris witnessed, the more he felt driven to interview and understand Osama ben Laden, who was simultaneously the most hated and the most revered man on earth.
Dr. Agris will present and sign his recently published book “Tears on the Sand”. It is a story of the doctor’s evolving mission, of many thousands of lives devastated by a brutality, and his meetings with the infamous Sheik.
The proceeds from book sale will benefit The Agris-Zindler Children’s Foundation.
