  • Womens Business Enterprise Alliance May 6th

    Cox Media Group Houston is proud of the partnership we have with WBEA. WBEA President April Day brought Jane Henry, partner & owner of Xcution, Inc., which was named the #2 Fastest Growing Business in Houston (2011) by the Houston Business Journal. Jane Henry talked about how the upcoming conference helps companies like hers connect with other woman-owned businesses as well as big corporations that specifically want to do business with women business owners. She will also offer a few tips to you on how to win business while at this conference so listeners get practical info on how to use the event to their advantage.

  • Community Platform - Houston Arboretum 1/20

    Guest was Keely pate with the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. The arboretum contains over five miles of nature trails, with forest, pond, wetland, and meadow habitats. Specialty gardens include a Hummingbird & Butterfly Island, Sensory Garden, and Wildlife Garden. We discussed children and adult education programs, summer camps, arbor day celebrations and the loss of thousands of trees due to the drought.

  • Community Platform - My Service Dog 1/20

    The guest was Allie Keaton, with My Service Dog Inc… her dog Nick, Client Theresa Martin and her dog Mollie. A 501(c)(3) non-profit developed to train Service Dogs to promote independence for the disabled. We discussed the services the dogs provide, and the training it takes to place those animals.

  • Community Platform 12/30 YMCA

    Guest was Giselle Patterson with the YMCA of Greater Houston. The YMCA is having a Healthy Living Lifestyle open house Saturday Jan 5th. The YMCA's New Year, 2013 campaign is healthy living and youth wellness. The focus is on preventing disease, especially diabetes, instead of losing weight.

    The guests were Jim Hoecker, Chairman of the board for “Impact a Hero” and Jason Shaw a twice wounded veteran who is one of many veterans who benefit from the impact program.     The guest was Anna Babin, President and CEO of the United Way of Greater Houston. The issues we discussed included the just completed campaign in which 79.2 million dollars was raised, and all time record amount. We also discussed the new campaign which begins in about a month. Anna explained to the audience where and how the money is spent. We further discussed the neighborhood programs and the 211 call center.

    The guest was Richard Elbein, Executive Director for the Alzheimer's Association of Houston and southeast Texas. The issues we discussed included new drug therapies to treat Alzheimer's. We also discussed care giver programs and the symptoms and early warning signs of the disease. We also discussed the diagnosis of Tennessee Women's basketball Coach Pat Summit.

    Guest: Dion Miller (40+ minutes) Position: City Manager Organization: City of Cleveland Program content: Discussion with Dion Miller concerning his background and qualifications and his job with the City of Cleveland. Discussed the job of a city manager in a charter-type city with a city manager type of government and what the job entails. Discussion on how the city manager interacts with the mayor and council members. How a city manager type of municipality is different from a mayoral-led city. What he sees in Cleveland's future and what he'd like to accomplish. Second Guest: Melvin Hunt (10+ minutes) Position: Liberty County Precinct Three Commissioner Organization: Liberty County government Program content: An update from Melvin Hunt on current issues facing the county and its commissioners - including new, unfunded, state mandates and predictions of another 10% cut in the county's funding. Discussed the addition of land added to Pct. 3 in the new redistricting, and a new project started there to blacktop the 30 miles of the county's dirt roads there to match the county roads in the rest of his precinct. Also provided listeners with updates of coming local events.

    The guests were Sandra Salazar, Executive Director and Bret Sanders, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the non-profit agency HeartGift. HeartGift provides free medical attention for children worldwide who suffer from heart disease. They are brought to Houston with their families for the life giving surgery.

    The guest was Julie Everly, National President for Lemonade Day which will be held in the greater Houston area one week from today on May 6th. Lemonade Day gives youngsters the chance to operate a business for a day. The kids must formulate budgets, advertising, funding, locations price and taste as part of the business experience. The program continues top grow across the country with Houston its biggest market for participation.

The issues we discussed included the 6th annual “Safe Child Initiative” a program that asks for the public's help in getting sex offenders off the street. In 5 years 196 predators have been captured. We also discussed child internet safety and gave tips to parents on keeping the kids safe.

    The guests were Eric Anderson, Area Director and Tyrone Smith, Community Director and former NFL player with the San Francisco 49ers. Both men are with the non-profit, Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The issues we discussed included summer camps for area youngsters that will be held in and around the Houston area including College Station. We also discussed ethics in athletics in light of the New Orleans “bounty program”. We also discussed how FCA is influencing the lives of young athletes.

    The guests were Mary Holman, Founder of “Katy Rocks” and Patrick Mouton, Director of the Aldine-Westfield branch of the Salvation Army. Katy Rocks is a non-profit who teaches children how to play a musical instrument and oftentimes provides the instrument free of charge. Mr. Mouton talked of children in his community who have benefited from the efforts of Katy Rocks.

    The guest was Renee Tuggle, Statewide Coordinator for the “Adopt a Beach Spring Clean-up”. The annual event enlists volunteers to clean Texas beaches from Beaumont to the Mexican border. Renee told the audience how they can help as over 10 thousand volunteers will participate.

The non-profit center provides much needed services to the senior citizens of Montgomery County, including meals on wheels, 6 activity centers, and free medical transportation.
