CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Emergency crews were on the scene of a crash involving Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton just after noon Tuesday near uptown.

Police said the crash happened around 12:30 p.m. on the Church Street bridge over Interstate 277.

The severity of Newton's injuries was not immediately available but witnesses told Channel 9 that Newton's truck flipped four times.

Paramedics loaded Newton into an ambulance on a stretcher and rushed him to the hospital. The Carolina Panthers reported on the team's official Twitter account that Newton suffered 2 fractures in his lower back and no further internal injuries.

According to the Associated Press, photos from the scene showed Newton smiling as he was attended to by an officer on the ground. Another car also appeared to be involved in the crash and had front end damage.

The road was closed briefly as crews investigated the crash.
